History

Smuggler Marine primarily builds Smuggler RIBs, Super Yacht tenders, Amphibious RIBS and Commercial RIBS. Based in Henderson Auckland, the company began building the iconic Smuggler brand in 2004 with the launch of the first new Stealth 695 Hard top with its 27-degree deep vee Smuggler hull. This signalled a change of company direction from previously building sport fishers and yachts up to 16 metres in length. Smuggler were the first fibreglass boat builder in NZ to add custom fitted fibreglass pontoons for stability to the Stealth range in 2007. In 2009 the iconic Bonito Boats was purchased, then branded Smuggler to fit in with the range.

The Smuggler range has increased since 2004 to include the Strata RIB range from 4-11 metres.Utilising the 27-degree Smuggler hull enabled the development of the Strata 750, which quickly became one of the company’s most popular models. The 6-metre range of Strata RIBs were originally designed by world class New Zealand designer Scott Robson, with the remainder of the RIB range designed by company director David Pringle.

In 2012 Smuggler introduced amphibious technology to their Strata RIB range. This change in direction meant Smuggler Marine are now building Australasia’s most trusted and reliable Amphibious craft, using the Anura drive system. As of 2025 Smuggler have built over 140 Amphibious craft for New Zealand and export markets, including a number of superyacht tenders.

Smuggler Marine remains a family business, with Directors David and Pauline Pringle, along with son Logan Pringle playing a role in day-to-day business operations. The family’s personal boating background, along with over 50 years boatbuilding experience, gives customers confidence they are dealing with people who understand their boating needs as they continue to produce for both domestic and export markets.
